Digital Carbon Monitoring and Scalable Campus Projection Model — A Pilot at the AKU Rectorate Building

Measure one building, project the campus.

Institutional carbon inventories are usually compiled by hand, completed once and never repeated. This pilot at the Afyon Kocatepe University Rectorate Building draws activity data from the institution's administrative and financial records in structured form and processes it in an ERP-based calculation layer, making the inventory repeatable — and turns building-level indicators into a campus-scale projection model that accounts for building typology.

Measure

Electricity, fuel, vehicles, procurement, commuting and waste data are gathered under a single boundary definition, with the source and assumption behind every figure documented.

Optimize

Data is mapped for structured transfer. Which record feeds which emission category becomes an explicit schema.

Sustain

The inventory stops being a project rebuilt from scratch each year. Results are published on a publicly accessible panel updated periodically, and building-level indicators are scaled across the campus.

Not all of Scope 3 — only the categories the data can actually support. A narrow, explicit boundary is what makes the result verifiable.

Roadmap

From submission to presentation

  1. August 2026

    Project submission

    The project was submitted to the Council of Higher Education within the single form compiled by Afyon Kocatepe University.

  2. August – September

    Data collection

    Energy, fuel and procurement records for the Rectorate Building are compiled and the staff commuting survey is run.

  3. October

    Calculation and ERP mapping

    Emission factors are documented, intensity indicators (tCO₂e per m² and per capita) calculated, and the mapping schema and scaling model built.

  4. November 2026

    COP31 · Antalya

    Preliminary findings, the scaling model and the methodological guide are presented.

Not a report — a repeatable system

Inventory report

A 2025 carbon inventory for the Rectorate Building, with documented boundaries and assumptions.

ERP-based calculation layer

A mapping schema and calculation module linking administrative and financial records to emission categories.

Scaling model

A projection from building-level indicators to the whole campus and comparable administrative service buildings. Labs and workshops need separate coefficients.

Public panel

An online dashboard where results are published and updated periodically.

Methodological guide

An open guide in Turkish and English for replication by other units and institutions.

Academic publication

A manuscript prepared for submission to a peer-reviewed journal.

Afyon Kocatepe University — the Rectorate Building serves as pilot site, data source and implementation environment. Led by Dr. Hacer Arıol, with Turgay Taymaz and Büşra Arıol (Env. Eng.).

Technology partner

DH Carbon Digital Transformation Technologies — calculation methodology, data architecture and reporting infrastructure. A technology venture based at Zafer Technopark.

Transfer

The method transfers beyond public institutions to service buildings — schools, offices, retail centres and hotels. For multi-branch organisations it scales into a reporting layer covering the entire network.
